8 Common Mistakes Committed When Submitting to Directories
If your going to all the effort of submitting your website to directories it is worth doing it right and getting the best efforts from your work. Here are 8 common mistakes -
1. The site is incomplete, not finished or has broken links.
2. The design of the site is poor - Make sure that your site is polished and that it looks good before making a submission.
3. Define what the site is about and what purpose it serves on the net. If your site is just promotional material then why should a directory owner bother. See my guide “How to make your site look like it has a purpose”
4. Using a title that is Promotional rather than Informative. For instance a website on Toasters using the title “cheap white toasters” rather than “Online Toaster Guide” - which do you think Yahoo would accept? With some creative thought you can get keywords into your title without sounding promotional.
5. The description is poorly written – spend some time writing the description so that I know what your website is about. The description is not the place to stuff keywords.
6. Using the same title over and over. Search engines like variation in inbound anchor text so it pays to come up with several titles and that rotate them during your submission process.
7. Focusing on quality not quantity – I would personally rather be in the DMOZ rather than 100 sites like the directorybucket.biz. Use your time focusing on the top directories.
8. Skipping paid directories – don’t skip a directory just because it costs a few bucks. If an established directory such as joeant.org or botw.org it might be worth paying as these directories probably pass a little trust with them.
